Gain & Loss provides you with a quick means to review key realized (capital) and unrealized gain and loss information within an Investment or Other Assets account or consolidation. You can also see the specific tax lot information for each holdings. You have the ability to view all activity, or narrow the results using filter criteria.
Unrealized Gain/Loss
The Unrealized Gain/Loss view is a holdings report. The filters in this view allow you to narrow results by asset class, equity sector, bond type, market cap, term (short-term versus long-term) and identifier. The 'as of' date defaults to the previous business day, but you can use the calendar widget to select a different date. Totals are displayed for Market Value, Tax Cost, Accruals, Total Market Value, and Unrealized Gain/Loss (losses are indicated in red font and parentheses). By clicking on the 'plus' sign next to the description, you can view all the tax lots for that specific holding. For each tax lot, Acquisition Date, Term (short vs. long), Quantity, Market Value, Tax Cost, and Unrealized Gain/Loss are displayed. The sum of each of these equals the values on the asset line item.
Note: Holding and prices displayed are as of the close of business on the date selected. Selecting the current date will display holdings
For Trust accounts, if tax lots are incomplete for a specific holding, no Unrealized Gain/Loss value will be displayed. The missing tax lot information is viewable at the expanded tax lot level.
Note: When viewing a consolidation in Unrealized Gain/Loss, when 'Roll-up Assets' is selected then assets held in multiple accounts will display as a single row. In this case, the 'Account' column will not be displayed.
Capital Gain/Loss
The Capital Gain/Loss view is a transaction report. The filters in this view allow you to narrow results by term (short-term versus long-term) and identifier. You can also use the date range functionality to select a 'smart date' (e.g., year to date, last 30 days, etc.) or choose specific dates. Totals are displayed for Proceeds, Tax Cost, and Realized Gain/Loss (losses are indicated in red font and parentheses). By clicking on the 'plus' sign next to the description, you can view all the tax lots for that specific asset. For each tax lot, Acquisition Date, Trade Date, Quantity, Trade Price, Proceeds, Tax Cost, Short Term or Long Term Gain/Loss are displayed. The sum of each of these equals the values on the asset line item.
Hard copy statements display information for redemptions and maturities when the prices are the same. This activity can be found in Private Passport by filtering the Investment Activity view by the Sales transaction type. Otherwise, only the transactions that result in a gain or loss are displayed on the Capital Gain/Loss view.
Note: When a consolidation is selected in the Account/Consolidation Selector, the 'Account' column in Capital Gain/Loss displays the investment or other assets account for which the activity occurred. When an account is selected in the Account/Consolidation Selector, the 'Account' column will still be displayed but it will always be the same account as the one chosen in the Account/Consolidation Selector.
