Why would an ACH transfer be returned to my account?

When you move money to your Northern Trust account from another financial institution, the ACH will be returned if the account at the other institution has insufficient funds on the scheduled transfer date. (We will attempt to process the ACH twice.)

In addition, an ACH transfer may be returned if the account at the other financial institution is closed.

When an ACH transfer is returned, both the original ACH transaction and the returned transaction appear on the Transaction Details page for your account.
